Teacher unions satisfied with meeting over intended strike

Accra, Sept. 1, GNA – The Concerned Teachers Union has expressed satisfaction with assurances from the Ministry of Education that teachers who successfully completed promotion examinations would be placed in their appropriate grades and ranks by the end of September 2026.

The assurance was given at a meeting between the unions and the Education Minister on Monday, following concerns over delays in the placement of qualified teachers.

Mr Isaac Nii Baah, Head of Compensation and Benefits at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), said in an interview after the meeting that teachers had been waiting for their promotion placements for several months.

He said the unions had issued a press release last Friday giving the Ghana Education Service (GES) until the close of Monday to complete the placement exercise, following an earlier commitment by the Service to undertake the process.

“By the close of September, the replacement will be done,” Mr Baah said, adding that the Minister and the Controller and Accountant-General had also assured the unions that a supplementary process would be undertaken to clear any outstanding placements.

He said although an earlier communication from the GES indicated that payment of promotion arrears would commence from July 2026, it had been agreed that the arrears would instead be calculated from January 2026.

Mr Baah said the arrangement would cover teachers who sat for the aptitude tests in December 2025 and February 2026.

On the renewal of the teachers’ collective agreement, he said the Education Minister had assured the unions that he would engage the Finance Minister on the matter and report back to them.

Mr Baah noted that the unions had earlier warned that they would consider their next course of action if the promotion placements were not completed by the deadline.

He said the unions were currently satisfied with the commitments reached at the meeting and would wait to see whether they were fulfilled.

“For now, we are okay with the promise, so we are waiting for these promises to be fulfilled. Otherwise, we would advise ourselves,” he said.
