Sunyani, (Bono), March 27, GNA-Mr Raphael Godlove Ahenu, an international human rights activist has described the adoption of the resolution on reparatory justice as a defining moment in the pursuit of global peace.

While commending the United Nations (UN) for adopting the historic resolution, he lauded the instrumental role of President John Dramani Mahama too.

Passed by the UN General Assembly, the resolution recognizes transatlantic slave trade as one of the gravest crimes against humanity, calling for a coordinated international response to address enduring consequences.

Mr Ahenu, also the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Sunyani-based Global Media Foundation, a human rights and media advocacy Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) gave the commendation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani.

He said adoption of the resolution reflected the growing global acknowledgment of the long-term impacts of slavery, colonialism, and systemic inequality on people of African descent worldwide.

“In fact, the initiative, led by Ghana, places the country at the forefront of international advocacy for historical accountability and restorative justice”, he stated, and lauded the President Mahama’s government “whose diplomatic push has rallied support from Africa and the global”.

Mr Ahenu said the adoption of the resolution was long-overdue, saying that “This is a victory not only for Africa but for humanity as a whole as it represents a bold step toward correcting

centuries of injustice and restoring dignity to millions affected by the legacy of slavery”.

He said the UN deserved commendation for demonstrating leadership and courage in tackling one of the most painful chapters in human history.

“While widely celebrated, the resolution had also reignited debate among some Western nations, with concerns raised over the legal and financial implications of reparations”, he added.

Nonetheless: “Supporters argue that genuine reconciliation cannot be achieved without acknowledgment, accountability, and concrete action”.

Mr Ahenu said as the momentum built worldwide, Ghana’s leadership and the UN’s endorsement signalled a transformative moment in global history.
