Over 2,200 churches registered in GAR –Local Gov’t Minister

Accra, Feb. 18, GNA –  Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, has announced that more than 2,200 churches are registered in the Greater Accra Region (GAR) alone as of 2025.

He noted that 98.1 per cent of those churches were single-owner operations, with the remaining affiliated with larger religious brands.

Mr Ibrahim announced this in Parliament on Wednesday in response to a question posed by Professor Kingsley Nyarko, Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, on the number of churches registered in the country.

He said the Office of the Registrar of Companies, formerly the Registrar General’s Department, registered churches as companies limited by guarantee.

The Department, he said, however, did not maintain a consolidated figure for the total number of churches nationwide.

The Minister said registration of religious bodies in Ghana is governed by PNDC Law 221 (1989), which grants legal recognition to churches, the ability to own property, and protection under Ghanaian laws.

According to the 2021 National Population and Housing Census, 71.2 per cent of Ghanaians were identified as Christians, with 31.6 per cent belonging to Pentecostal/Charismatic denominations, 18.4 per cent Protestant, 10 per cent Catholic, and 11.2 per cent affiliated with other Christian groups.

The figures highlight both the diversity and rapid expansion of religious institutions in the country, particularly in the Greater Accra Region, which continues to serve as a hub for faith-based activities.
