Sunyani (Bono), Feb. 25 ,GNA, The Narcotic Control Commission (NACOC) has established an office in the Sunyani West Municipality to combat drug abuse in the area.
Narcotic Control Officer (NCO) Fidelia Ali Yamusah, Sunyani West Municipal Commander of the Board, stated that the office has begun gathering intelligence in the area to enable them to work effectively to achieve their aim of controlling drug menace in the area.
It aims to regulate and control the use of narcotic drugs, ensuring they were used for medical and scientific purposes while preventing abuse and trafficking in fulfilment of the Board’s mandate in the country, she said
She said the office had started series of drug education in the various radio stations and would visit schools from the basic level to educate them on the dangers of drugs and its negative effect on the person’s life and future
The Commission visited institutions like the Sunyani West Police and Ghana Education Office to build collaboration and gather information of drug use situation in the area.
The team again visited the office of Ghana- West African programme to Combat AIDS and STI (WAPCAC ) to acquaint themselves with their activities.
Mr David Fianko Asante, Project Officer of the Bono and Bono East centre took the team round the centre to be briefed about the friendly strategies adopted by the office about harm reduction intervention for persons who use drugs.
Superintendent Eric Anaba , the Sunyani West Police Commander noted that drug abuse was high in the area, contributing to criminal activities, and expressed concern about its affects on the youth’s future.
The Commander advised the youth to avoid drugs and work hard to avoid future troubles.
He expressed hopes that the Municipality was under control.
