Morocco Announces MAD 3 Billion Emergency Support for Flood-Affected Provinces

Rabat, Feb. 13, GNA –Morocco has launched a comprehensive support programme valued at three billion dirhams to assist communities severely affected by extreme weather conditions recorded over the past two months, particularly in the Gharb Plain and Loukkos areas.
A statement from the Office of the Head of Government said the initiative follows High Instructions from His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who reiterated his commitment to safeguarding the well-being of citizens and improving living conditions in the impacted zones.
The Head of Government has consequently issued a decree declaring the recent extreme weather a “catastrophic event”, with the most affected communes across four provinces—Larache, Kénitra, Sidi Kacem and Sidi Slimane—designated as disaster areas.
According to the statement, the government developed the support programme after a detailed assessment of conditions on the ground and an evaluation of the economic and social impact of the severe weather.
The programme covers four main intervention areas:
775 million dirhams allocated for rehousing, compensation for loss of income, rehabilitation of affected homes and small businesses, and reconstruction of collapsed houses and 225 million for emergency interventions and in-kind support to meet the immediate needs of the affected population.
Others are 300 million dirhams to support farmers and livestock breeders and 1.7 billion dirhams earmarked for the rehabilitation of roads, hydro-agricultural infrastructure, and essential public service networks.
The statement added that His Majesty the King instructed the government to ensure the programme was implemented in an exemplary, rapid and responsible manner to enable citizens to return to normal living conditions as quickly as possible.
The recent exceptional weather caused flooding across more than 110,000 hectares and displaced nearly 188,000 people in the provinces of Larache, Kénitra, Sidi Kacem and Sidi Slimane, the statement concluded.
