Adaklu Waya (V/R), Aug. 28, GNA – Mr Jerry Yao Ameko, Adaklu District Chief Executive (DCE) has called on Religious Leaders to use their pulpits to help educate the youth on the dangers of drug abuse.
He alleged that the use of hard drugs by the youth had reached a crescendo and needed to be fought from all angles, including the pulpit.
Mr Ameko made the call when he addressed the youth wing of the Adaklu Sofa branch of the Salvation Army after they weeded and cleaned the premises of the Adaklu District Assembly at Adaklu Waya.
The work formed part of the Church’s Youth Week celebration and was on the theme “walking in the light.”
Mr Ameko who is also the Dean of Volta Region MDCEs urged the Church to join hands with the government and other stakeholders “to weed out the canker from society.”
He also appealed to them to help rehabilitate those who were addicted to drugs in their communities.
The DCE stated that nothing meaningful would come out of the youth-centred programmes and policies initiated by the government if the youth who were to be the beneficiaries became drug addicts and advised the youth to stay clear of drugs and other mind-altering substances to have a useful future.
Mr Ameko noted that it would affect them mentally and reminded them that the laws of the country would not spare them if they were caught using prohibited drugs.
“The use of these drugs will prevent you from reaching your ambitions because there is nothing good in them,” he noted.
He appealed to parents to take keen interest in the types of friends their wards kept and praised the youth of the Church for their communal spirit.
“I highly recommend you organize such vital exercise,” he said.
Mr Ameko appealed to other religious groups and voluntary organizations to emulate the shining example of the Salvation Army youth to help keep the district clean.
