Accra, Aug. 27, GNA – Nii Armah Ashietey, a former Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey and son of Teshie, has paid homage to the Chiefs and elders of Nii Ashie We in Teshie, his patrilineal home, as part of activities marking the Homowo celebration.
The visit provided an opportunity for the two-term MP on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to inform the Chiefs and elders of his intention to contest the NDC National Chairmanship position and seek their blessings and support as he embarked on the journey.
He said his late father started the tradition of visiting and paying homage, and as a son, he had come to continue the tradition and wish everyone a joyous festive season.
“We are here as children from this community to celebrate this special occasion with you. We are seeking God’s blessings in all our endeavours and also a prosperous GaDangbe. As a clan, we need to be united on all fronts,” Nii Ashietey said.
He said it was proper and respectful to seek the wisdom of his elders, while expressing gratitude to the traditional authorities for receiving him and blessing his political aspirations during the Homowo celebration.
He said: “As a child, before leaving home to embark on a journey, you need to ask for blessings from your father. I am here to seek your prayers and guidance as I embark on this journey of chairmanship.”
“I am currently standing for the position of Chairmanship for the NDC and I have come to officially make my intentions known to my fathers and the community and to also ask for support,” the former MP said.
He said the decision to seek the chairmanship was informed by his long-standing commitment to the party and desire to contribute to strengthening the NDC and the country as a whole.
Nii Ashietey said he had been a Mayor in Tema, an MP for Korle Klottey, Minister for the Greater Accra Region, Minister for Employment and Constituency Chairman.
He presented some alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and an undisclosed amount of money to the traditional leaders as a token of his appreciation and support for the Homowo festival.
Nii Ashiekwei Kwaobotcwey II, Dzaasetse of Teshie-Lenshie, advised the former MP to remain humble and consult widely as he embarked on his journey, urging him to make unity, service and the collective interest of the party his priority.
He said leadership was about sacrifice, integrity and bringing people together, adding that Nii Ashietey should remain focused, resilient and be mindful of the people he would bring on board.
“We wish you well in your pursuit and we pray that our ancestors and deities lead you and grant you victory for the betterment of our communities,” he said.
