Tamale, Feb 11, GNA – Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Wisdom Lavoe, Northern Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service has assured members of the public of sustained efforts by the Police to tackle robbery and emerging kidnapping cases in the region.

He said the Police in the region were on top of robbery and other criminal activities and remained committed to deploying the needed mechanisms to always ensure the safety and security of members of the public.

DCOP Mr Lavoe gave the assurance at a one-day step-down capacity building workshop organised by the Northern Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service for selected detectives in the region.

He said recent developments in criminal activities required the Police to be abreast of technological advancements in weapons, equipment and investigative methods, adding that criminals were constantly devising new strategies and innovations to outsmart security agencies.

He said “Day in and day out, they are strategising and adopting new methods to outwit the security forces. We must, therefore, also be proactive and stay ahead of them.”

DCOP Lavoe explained that the workshop was aimed at inculcating personnel, new trends in criminal investigations, and strengthening their capacity to effectively respond to emerging security threats in the region.

He indicated that the training was also tailored to equip security personnel on the trends in highway robbery where criminals were increasingly using sophisticated weapons and technology to carry out their activities.

He said, “As part of this workshop, we brought together selected detectives across the region, including key stakeholders with the requisite expertise and knowledge, to properly equip them on new developments in criminal activities, especially highway robbery.”

DCOP Mr Lavoe revealed that the Police Service was exploring the deployment of modern technology including drones and protective vehicles to enhance surveillance and operational effectiveness on major roads across the region.

He said, “This is to ensure that we are up to the task and capable of containing criminal activities on our highways and within our communities.”

He underscored the need to effectively resource the Police Service in the region, adding that the Command was committed to utilizing the available resources to combat crime and protect lives and properties.

He said, “We have what it takes at the moment to tackle crime, but we also need more support to effectively contain the situation.”

DCOP Mr Lavoe observed that some criminals had graduated from armed robbery to kidnapping describing the trend as worrying and gave assurance that the Police Service was devising strategies to stay ahead of such developments.

The workshop formed part of ongoing efforts by the Ghana Police Service to strengthen the capacity of its personnel and improve crime prevention and detection in the region.
