Axim (W/R), Feb. 05, GNA – Nana Joseph Tetteh, the Acting Chief Fisherman at Lower Axim Traditional Area, has praised the government’s efforts in retooling the fishing industry, citing a surge in catches and a boost to the local economy.
In am interview with the Ghana News Agency, Nana Tetteh attributed the bumper harvests to strategic interventions by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, saying fishermen had experienced consistent catches since last year.
The situation had enabled fishmongers to sustain their businesses, thereby booming the local economy.
Nana Tetteh explained that the increased catches had positively impacted on the community, with more fish available for consumption and sale.
Despite the progress, Nana Tetteh noted that irregular supply of pre-mix fuel hampered fishing activities, even though the government had reduced its price.
He appealed for regular and accessible pre-mix fuel to sustain the industry, saying “anything that will help fishers to catch more fish must be given to them.”
Nana Tetteh also requested for the government’s assistance in providing affordable canoes and fishing nets, as current prices were expensive.
He urged the government to supply nets and support fishermen in adopting sustainable fishing practices, following a ban on mono-filament nets which catch small pelagics and was an infraction at sea.
He emphasised the need for fishermen to adopt environmentally friendly fishing methods to ensure the long-term sustainability of the industry.
He said fishing was the mainstay of people in the area, and that support for fishermen was crucial to maintaining the industry’s growth.
Nana Tetteh expressed gratitude to the government for its efforts so far and looked forward to continued support to ensure the fishing industry reached its full potential.
