Tema, Jan. 01, GNA- Some members of the Apostolic Church in Tema have said that the tradition of wearing white attire during December 31 crossover night services symbolises gratitude to God, spiritual renewal, and victory over the challenges of the outgoing year.
Mrs Akosua Antonio, a member of the Church, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that she had worn white every December 31 as an expression of thanksgiving to God for His protection throughout the year.
She said surviving all 365 days was not guaranteed and that wearing white served as a personal act of appreciation for God’s grace and preservation.
“The 31st of December is a time to thank God for all He has done for me. Wearing white gives me a sense of renewal and hope as I prepare to enter the New Year,” she said.
Ms Joanna Obeng, a Christian, said she did not know the exact origin of the practice but described it as a tradition she grew up with.
Ms Obeng explained that her mother encouraged the family to wear white to Church on December 31, and over the years, it had become a family custom.
She noted that the practice was common across many churches, adding that the widespread wearing of white fostered unity among worshippers.
She said the attire was also believed to symbolise purity and good intentions as believers welcomed the New Year.
Mr Chris Lamptey, another Apostolic Church member, said wearing white on December 31 represented victory over the difficulties of the past year.
He explained that white symbolised purity and triumph, noting that the practice reminded him of God’s faithfulness and encouraged him to enter the New Year with renewed determination.
According to him, the tradition served as motivation to pursue greater achievements in the year ahead.
