Gomoa Brofoyedur raises funds for 40-seater community toilet

By James Esuon

Gomoa Brofoyedur (C/R), Jan. 12, GNA – The chiefs and people of Brofoyedur in the Gomoa Central District of the Central Region have celebrated their annual Akwambo Festival to raise funds towards the construction of a 40-seater modern community toilet facility.

At a grand durbar to climax the celebration, Nana Esuon Abonyi Kwaatah II, Esihene of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area and Chief of Brofoyedur, said the project would help prevent the outbreak of contagious diseases by improving sanitation in the community.

He said the festival was also aimed at uniting family members, reviewing past achievements, discussing challenges affecting development, and planning for the future.

Nana Kwaatah said funds raised during the festival would also be used to complete a community centre project which had reached the lintel level but had stalled for some time.

He called on citizens of Brofoyedur living in Accra, Sekondi-Takoradi, Kumasi, Sunyani, the Volta Region and other places to pay their annual Akwambo Festival levies to support sanitation improvement efforts in the town.

The Chief commended the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Gomoa Central, Mr Hackman Aidoo, for supplying two bundles of roofing sheets to support the completion of the project.

He also praised the Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central, Mr Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, for donating water closets as part of his contribution.

Nana Kwaatah revealed that the former MP, Mrs Naana Eyiah Quansah, had earlier constructed a community toilet facility for the town, but rapid population growth had created the need for a larger one to reduce pressure on the existing facility.

He appealed to parents whose children had dropped out of school to send them back and invest in their education, stressing that education was key to a better quality of life.

The Chief further urged young people who had completed Junior High School but were unable to proceed to Senior High School to learn vocational and technical trades to earn decent livelihoods.

Nana Ama Amponsah I, the Queenmother of Brofoyedur, expressed satisfaction with the significant reduction in teenage pregnancies in the community, attributing it to intensified sensitisation efforts by her office. She urged parents to support the education of the girl-child to the highest level.

Nana Bondzie Essuman I, Gyantuahene of Gomoa Brofoyedur, advised the youth to shun hard drugs and position themselves to pursue higher education and take advantage of available job opportunities for a better future.

He assured that the chiefs and opinion leaders would safeguard the environment from pollution and work tirelessly to ensure the completion of the project.
