Mafi Avedo (V/R), Jan. 11, GNA – Residents of Mafi Avedo and Bakpa Avedo in the Central Tongu District have observed this month’s National Sanitation Day with community-led clean-up activities aimed at improving environmental cleanliness and road safety.

The exercise, which attracted youth, opinion leaders and other residents, focused on clearing thick bushes along major roads that had obstructed visibility for motorists and contributed to minor accidents in recent months.

Participants said the initiative was necessary to safeguard lives, enhance visibility for road users and improve the overall outlook of the communities.

Mr Dodzi Addison Mornyuie, the District Chief Executive of Central Tongu, who joined residents during the exercise, described the activity as a proactive and practical approach to protecting lives and ensuring safe movement within the area.

He said overgrown vegetation had become a major risk to motorists, particularly at night, and called for regular collaboration among residents, local authorities and other stakeholders to sustain such efforts.

“This exercise is not only about sanitation but also about safety. Clearing these bushes helps reduce accidents, protects lives and keeps our communities clean,” he said.

Some residents who spoke to the Ghana News Agency expressed satisfaction with the level of participation and appealed for the regular enforcement of communal labour to maintain a clean and hazard-free environment.

They also urged the Central Tongu District Assembly to support similar initiatives with logistics and sustained public education on sanitation compliance.

The National Sanitation Day, instituted in 2014, is observed monthly to encourage community participation in environmental cleanliness and to complement government efforts at improving public sanitation nationwide.
