Accra, Dec 18, GNA – The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has officially launched its first-ever Virtual Branch, a digital platform designed to provide 24-hour, nationwide access to pension services.
The initiative, launched at the SSNIT Pension House in Accra, marked a significant leap in the Trust’s digital transformation agenda, aiming to eliminate geographical and time barriers to social security services.
The Virtual Branch is engineered as a comprehensive digital portal.
It will enable users to perform critical transactions such as registration, payment of contributions, access to statements, and updating of records without the need to visit a physical SSNIT office.
This all-day, full service platform is supported by staff available to provide real-time assistance.
Speaking at the launch, SSNIT Director-General, Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney, said the introduction of the initiative was a direct response to the evolving nature of work.
“We are bringing services to the doorsteps of the people to make it convenient for them,” he stated.
He emphasised that the goal is to ensure seamless compliance for employers and easy access for all workers, including those in the gig economy and informal sector.
The launch comes as SSNIT manages an expanding membership base.
Current data indicates that active contributors now number over 2.09 million, a substantial increase from 340,000 at the scheme’s inception.
The Trust currently supports 257,000 individuals on its pension payroll.
The scheme manages assets worth GH¢24.5 billion, with 99 percent of these investments channeled into the Ghanaian economy across key sectors including real estate, information and communication technology, and energy.
Mr. Mohammed Adams Sukparu, the Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, commended SSNIT for aligning with the national digitalization agenda and creating an inclusive system for all workers.
He said recent years have seen the deployment of biometric systems, a mobile application, and integration with the Ghana Card.
Mr. Sukparu stated that the platform is a vertical realisation of the principle that every worker must have access to essential services conveniently, efficiently and with dignity, anytime, anywhere.
He emphasised that the government’s ongoing work to expand broadband infrastructure, enhance cybersecurity, and promote interoperability across public platforms is designed to enable such innovations.
“Our pension institutions must evolve. They must meet workers where they are, on their phones, digital platforms and across virtual spaces.”
He praised SSNIT for designing solutions for a new generation of contributors and for bringing gig workers, freelancers, artisans, small business owners often outside traditional employment, closer to the pension system.
