Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly tops Oti Region in 2025 performance assessment

Dambai (O/R), July 9, GNA – The Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly has emerged as the best-performing Municipal and District Assembly (MDA) in the Oti Region in the 2025 Performance Assessment, recording an impressive score of 93.50 per cent to secure the top position among the region’s nine assemblies.

The Assembly’s achievement marks a remarkable turnaround, having climbed from ninth position in the 2024 assessment to first place in 2025, reflecting significant improvements in governance, planning, financial management, and service delivery.

The annual assessment, conducted to evaluate the performance of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies across the country, measures compliance with key governance indicators, including development planning, budgeting, financial accountability, procurement processes, revenue mobilisation, project implementation, social accountability, and effective public service delivery.

According to the regional assessment results, the Krachi Nchumuru District Assembly placed second with a score of 90.50 per cent after moving from eighth position in 2024.

The Jasikan Municipal Assembly maintained its third position with a score of 87.40 per cent, demonstrating consistency in administrative performance and implementation of development programmes.

The Nkwanta North District Assembly ranked fourth with 81.40 per cent, while the Guan District Assembly secured fifth position with a score of 78.25 per cent.

The Biakoye District Assembly placed sixth with 71.50 per cent, followed by the Krachi East Municipal Assembly in seventh position with 63.00 per cent.

The Krachi West District Assembly ranked eighth with a score of 50.60 per cent, while the Kadjebi District Assembly placed ninth with 45.60 per cent.

The assessment forms part of government’s broader efforts to strengthen decentralisation and improve local governance by encouraging accountability, transparency, and efficient utilisation of public resources at the district level.

It also serves as an important monitoring and evaluation tool to assess the capacity of assemblies to implement development projects, manage public finances prudently, mobilise internally generated funds, and provide quality services to citizens.

Development practitioners say the significant improvement recorded by some assemblies demonstrates growing commitment by local authorities to strengthen institutional capacity, improve project execution and respond effectively to the development needs of their respective communities.

They noted that while the rankings highlight outstanding performances, they also provide valuable lessons for lower-ranked assemblies to identify operational gaps, strengthen administrative systems, and adopt best practices to improve future assessments.

Officials have therefore encouraged all Municipal and District Assemblies in the region to remain committed to prudent financial management, inclusive planning, transparency and effective implementation of government policies aimed at improving the living conditions of residents.

They stressed that sustained improvements in local governance would contribute significantly to accelerated socio-economic development, enhanced public confidence in local authorities, and the overall achievement of national decentralisation objectives.

The 2025 assessment results are expected to guide policy decisions, institutional reforms, and capacity-building initiatives to further strengthen local governance and improve development outcomes across the Oti Region.
