Keta (VR), Dec 10, GNA – Residents in the Keta municipality of the Volta Region have expressed distress over the frequent and regular electricity power outages in the area, which has been disrupting daily life and causing inconvenience to residents.Â
The situation has gotten worse in recent weeks, with some areas experiencing between 4-5 hours frequent power outage per day and has affected businesses, schools, and households, with many residents complaining about the impact on their daily activities.
Mr Edwin Korbla Doe, a pupil teacher at Keta, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, described the situation as frustrating, making it difficult for many to even charge their phones or do any work with ease while the power goes off and comes back on after hours which was not unacceptable.
“The situation is quite disappointing; I have lost count of the number of times the power has gone off these few weeks. It is affecting our daily business and our children’s education. We need a solution to this problem quickly.”
He said that the power outages have also affected the local economy, with many businesses struggling to stay afloat and stated that businesses could not even keep shops open because there was no power to run their generators.
Mr Doe lamented about how constant and continues power outages has damaged many electrical appliances including refrigerators, radios, irons, funs among others and called on the electricity company of Ghana to resolve any challenges to prevent further damages.
Madam Makafui Kumedro, another resident, said that the situation in Keta has highlighted the need for the government and the ECG to prioritise the power sector and ensure that every citizen has access to reliable electricity without any difficulties.
She said the frequent power outages in Keta were a stark reminder of the challenges facing the power sector which needed the necessary urgent actions to address the challenges.
While some residents believed and attributed the power outages to technical issues and maintenance work, others also were skeptical that the ECG needs to do more to address the challenges to avert problems such as theft during night power outages.
The residents appealed to the ECG to go the extral mile to mitigate all the inconvenience caused and assure the customers of reliable and constant power supply always to help boost businesses for more income generation.
All the necessary efforts made by the GNA to get Keta ECG for explanation on the situation were futile, but residents were still with the hope that the situation would be normalised to enable improvement of the system ahead of the upcoming yuletide.
