Ghana petitions ECOWAS over challenges Ghanaian businesses face Nigeria

By Joyce Danso

Accra, Dec. 16, GNA – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has petitioned ECOWAS to investigate alleged governmental interference in the operation of Ghanaian businesses in Nigeria.

The petition was submitted at the 95th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers held in Abuja from December 10 to 12, 2025.

Ghana expressed concern over challenges faced by Ghanaian owed businesses in Nigeria, citing Jonah Capital PLC, a real estate company owned by Sir Samuel Jonah, as an example.

To support the matter, Ghana presented a petition on behalf of the company and urged ECOWAS to act to prevent any cross‑border trade dispute.

The Council acknowledged the concerns and requested further information.

The petition follows a year‑long ownership dispute over the River Park Estate in Abuja, which has developed into a corporate matter.

Reports indicate that questions have arisen regarding the reassignment of shares involving Jonah Capital Nigeria Limited and Houses for Africa Nigeria Limited.

It is also reported that the issue is before Nigeria’s National Assembly and the courts, with concerns raised about due process and regulatory procedures.

Nigeria’s Minister of Trade has not issued a public response, prompting concern among investors and the foreign business community.

Nigeria’s next steps, observers noted, would likely determine whether the issue is settled through ECOWAS‑led institutional processes or risks evolving into a broader economic and diplomatic concern between the two countries.
