School children, teachers call for review of sizes, weight of pads

Takoradi, June 04, GNA- School children and teachers within the Takoradi Central Circuit of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metro Education Unit have lamented the weight and sizes of sanitary pads distributed by the government.

The pupils told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the government-supplied pad was comparable to a panty liner on the market and was therefore unable to properly manage their monthly cycle.

Some of the girls said they had to use more pads and change frequently during learning hours, which interrupted their concentration and emotional stability.

The concern, supported by a female teacher, was expressed during this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day celebration at Bedu Addo Methodist Basic School in Takoradi, Western Region.

Madam Sophia Ama Otabir, National Women’s Commissioner for the NDC Professionals Forum, who graced the celebration, said girls needed to be equipped with the right information on menstruation and hygiene to take control of that stage in their lives.

She therefore lauded the government’s initiative to supply free sanitary products to school children.

Madam Otabir, however, took the concern on the size and weight in good faith and promised to follow up with the Ministry and agencies mandated for improved quality and quantity.

Madam Karen Ama Moses, the Assembly Member for Railway and Harbour Area, noted how vulnerable girls were during puberty due to poverty and called on teachers to equip them with knowledge.

She said: “These children are clueless and we need to guide them to guarantee a better future for them and the country at large.”

Madam Moses also called on providers of the school sanitary pads to conduct proper assessments on the biological and physiological needs of modern-day school pupils and deliver products that ensured comfort and peaceful learning.
