Four confirmed dead after giant wave hits natural pool in Tenerife

Madrid, Dec 8, (dpa/GNA) – The death toll stemming from a giant wave that crashed into a natural swimming pool on the western coast of the Spanish island of Tenerife, dragging several swimmers into the sea, rose to four on Monday, authorities said.

The latest confirmed fatality was a woman who had suffered cardiac arrest during Sunday’s incident, at the cliffs of Los Gigantes in the Santiago del Teide area. She was resuscitated by paramedics and airlifted to a hospital, but later died there.

Rescuers continue to search for a woman who was swept out to sea, the Canary Islands emergency services said.

According to media reports, several people swept away by the waves managed to reach the shore on their own. State broadcaster RTVE reported that local authorities had issued warnings about high waves on Sunday.

Authorities had previously confirmed the fatalities of two men and a woman.

Two of the dead were Slovakian, the Slovakian state news agency TASR reported on Monday, citing information from the Foreign Ministry in Bratislava. Another person with Slovakian citizenship was injured.

The incident comes about a month after a series of giant waves on November 8, swept multiple people into the sea, including many tourists, mainly from France. Three people died and 15 were injured in those incidents along Tenerife’s coast.
