Gwollu, (UWR), May 17, GNA – Mr Mohammed Adams Sukparu, Member of Parliament (MP) for Sissala West Constituency, has launched the Sissala West District Teachers’ Award scheme to recognise teachers in his constituency for their invaluable services to society.
The initiative, the first of its kind in the constituency, was also to encourage the teachers to give their best in delivering quality education in the area.
Speaking at the launch in Gwollu, Mr Sukparu, also the Deputy Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, stressed the importance of quality education and human resources development to a country’s development.
The launching also culminated into the maiden award ceremony that honoured 20 teachers for their outstanding service.
“Teachers are the backbone of every successful society. They are the torchbearers who light the path for our future generations”, Mr Sukparu explained.
He reflected on the impact teachers have had on his life, recalling how dedicated educators supported and believed in him during his early years at Buoti, a small farming community in the area.
The MP noted that education gave him direction and opened opportunities that shaped his journey, emphasising that his success is closely tied to the teachers who guided him.
He explained that this personal experience inspired the establishment of the awards scheme to recognise and appreciate the vital role teachers play in society.
Mr Sukparu commended the teachers’ resilience, especially in a time when the education sector faced numerous challenges, including inadequate resources and infrastructure.
Mr Chakura Dramani, the Sissala West District Director of Education, highlighted the steady improvement in academic performance in the district, noting a rise in Basic Education Certificate Examination performances over the years.
He commended the MP for his consistent support of the education sector, citing the donation of furniture, financial aid for mock examinations, and the construction of the library.
He mentioned some challenges affecting effective teaching and learning in the district, including inadequate teaching and non-teaching staff.
The Director added that there was pressure on educational infrastructure in the district due to the rising student population, resulting from the refugee centre in the district.
He appealed for the renovation of the district library and the provision of at least 1,000 mono desks to facilitate the smooth conduct of external examinations.
The overall best teacher award went to Mr Adamu Yussif Balubuo of Wasai Basic School.
The award comprised motorcycles, refrigerators, LED television sets, laptop computers, citations, and cash prizes for exceptional teachers who demonstrated dedication to their work.
It was classified into Kindergarten, Primary division, Junior High School, and the Senior High School categories, including School Improvement Support Officers.
The award winners were selected through a transparent process, based on their commitment to excellence in teaching, their ability to inspire students, and their overall impact on the community.
