Denu (V/R), Dec 19, GNA – Resident drivers, and other road users in Denu, within the Ketu South Municipality, have expressed deep frustration and fear as the traffic lights at Denu Junction remain broken for more than six years, creating daily danger for everyone who uses the road.
The menace as observed by the GNA causes heavy vehicular and pedestrian struggle for safe passage.
Many residents described the junction as a location where accidents occur, especially during peak movement hours and on market days.
Mr Clement Agbenu, a taxi driver, said the absence of functioning traffic lights makes the road use more challenging.
“The traffic light helped everyone. Now there is no guide. On market days, it becomes very risky because people, cars and motorbikes all try to cross at the same time,” he said.
Mr Agbenu explained that the frequency of near crashes is worrying and could become dangerous if urgent attention is not given especially as the Christmas season approaches.
Mr Israel Selikem Bossman, Assemblyman of the Denu Electoral Area, confirmed the concerns and described the non-functioning lights as a long-standing challenge affecting the community.
He said he had raised the matter on the floor of the Assembly several times, but was informed that repairing the lights is the responsibility of the Ghana Highway Authority.
“At our last Assembly meeting, I raised it again. Leadership said that they have written to the Ghana Highway Authority but are still waiting for a response,” he explained.
Mr Bossman added that when initial efforts failed, he attempted to lobby logistics from a philanthropist who was willing to support the repair works but the Assembly reportedly declined, insisting that only the Ghana Highway Authority was mandated to work on traffic lights
He therefore appealed once again to the Authority to urgently repair the malfunctioning lights to ensure the safety of road users.
Several other residents expressed concern about how children, traders and persons with disabilities struggle to cross the road, especially when traffic volumes increase on market days.
They called on authorities to swiftly prioritise the repair works to avert possible future accidents.
