Sunyani, (Bono), Dec. 9, GNA – The Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Cecil R Addo, the Bono Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has urged market women and traders to avoid acts that could cause fire outbreaks as the Christmas festivities set-in.
He said the command had dispatched fire fighters to visit some major markets in the region and to quickly respond to fire outbreaks.
In an interview with the media in Sunyani, ACFO Addo said the command also had plans that would enable fire personnel to be on a 24-hour standby at the various markets and to respond to fire outbreaks in the season.
ACFO Addo expressed concern that some of the command’s fire tenders were over-aged, unable to function properly and appealed for more logistical support that would well position the service to respond to fire outbreaks effectively.
He expressed concern about the rising cases of fire outbreaks in the region, saying in 2024 the command recorded 233 fire outbreaks between January and December.
ACFO Addo the command had recorded 265 fire outbreaks this year, a 13 percent increase in the previous year’s figure, saying that his outfit would soon reactivate and support fire volunteer squads to fight bushfires at the community levels.
“The law mandates the service to ensure that places like restaurants, hotels, filling stations, markets and schools obtain fire certificates”, he stated, and urged the installation of fire extinguishers and detectors in all public places.
