Asante-South police detain military officer for attempted arms sale‎

     Bekwai (Ash), Dec. 18, GNA – The Ashanti South Police Command has apprehended a military officer for attempting to sell firearms to an undercover police operative.‎ 

The suspect, W.O II David Kofi Brew of the 4th Battalion Infantry, was arrested on Tuesday December 16, 2025 at 1430 hours  at the Bekwai Shell filling station, where he was about to sell the fire arms, to an undercover officer who had feigned interest. 

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Princeton Peasah Darkwah, Public relations Officer of the Ashanti South Command, who made this known, said the arrest was conducted following an intelligence-led operation. 

He said the operation was part of ongoing initiatives to dismantle networks facilitating the supply of arms to criminal factions in Obuasi and its adjacent communities.‎ 

Preliminary intelligence suggested that the military officer was allegedly involved in the illicit distribution of firearms.‎ 

The police reported that, acting on this intelligence, they deployed undercover operatives to engage the suspect on December 15, 2025, during which, he arrived in a military vehicle bearing registration number 54 GA 92 to meet an agent.‎ 

Police documentation indicated that the suspect informed the undercover agent that he could provide M16 rifles, G3 assault rifles, pistols, and other weaponry.‎ 

Consequently, the undercover agent consented to purchase an M16 rifle, with the military officer quoting a sum of GHS 80,000.00‎ 

On December 16, 2025, at approximately 1430 hours, the suspect contacted the undercover agent, stating that the firearm and an additional pistol were ready for collection.  

The police further said that, he met the agent at the Bekwai Shell Filling Station, and in the course of transferring the weapons, he was apprehended alongside the arms. 

Items confiscated at the time of arrest included a TMM 22 assault rifle loaded with 99 rounds of ammunition and two 12-round magazines, as well as an Ash Taurus GX2 pistol with 100 rounds of ammunition and three 12-round magazines.‎ 

During interrogation, the suspect confessed to selling weapons to individuals in and around Obuasi.‎ 

The suspect is currently in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings and formal notification to his superiors.
