GNA Stringers laud plans to modernise GNA’s operations, welcome digital-first strategy

By Daniel Agbesi Latsu, GNA

Kadjebi (O/R), Nov. 15, GNA – Some Ghana News Agency (GNA) Stringers in the Volta and Oti Regions have applauded the government’s recent announcement to modernise the Agency’s operations through the completion of a multimedia production studio and rollout of digital-first content across all platforms.

The Stringers described the move as timely and transformational, noting that the state-owned wire service had reached a stage, where enhanced technological capacity was essential for maintaining its relevance and leadership in the fast-evolving media landscape.

Mr Evans Worlanyo Ameamu, a Stringer at Keta in the Volta Region, said the Agency’s shift towards digital-first journalism was overdue.

He said the multimedia production studio, when completed, would significantly boost the quality of news production and enable the Agency to compete favourably with contemporary media institutions.

He noted that the introduction of advanced digital tools would also empower field reporters to file stories faster and with richer content.

“This initiative will not only enhance the speed of information dissemination but will also improve the visual and audio quality of our reports. It positions the GNA to meet the demands of today’s consumers who prefer dynamic and multimedia-rich news,” he said.

He added that Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister for Finance’s announcement demonstrated a renewed government commitment to strengthening media infrastructure, saying that effective implementation of the initiative would help firmly position the GNA as a leading news agency in the country.

Mr Kingsley Mamore, a Stringer at Dambai in the Oti Region, also welcomed the government’s vision, describing it as a step that would strengthen the Agency’s capacity to serve as a credible and authoritative national news source.

He stated that with the media space becoming increasingly digital and competitive, the GNA needed modern equipment and advanced production capabilities to maintain its edge.

“This is the right direction. For years, Stringers have worked tirelessly with limited resources, yet we continue to uphold the Agency’s standards. Providing us with modern digital tools will further enhance our productivity and the quality of content we generate,” he noted.

Mr Mamore added that the planned upgrade would further reinforce the GNA’s mandate by equipping journalists with the tools needed to deliver accurate, credible and timely information to citizens, institutions and national stakeholders.

Other Stringers, who spoke with the GNA, expressed optimism that the modernisation initiative would open more opportunities for training, create a more enabling environment for journalists, and attract younger media professionals into the Agency.

They also encouraged the government to expedite the process and ensure that the new infrastructure is accessible to reporters across all regions, especially those in rural and emerging news areas.

The GNA, established in 1957, remains Ghana’s foremost newswire service and continues to play a vital role in gathering and disseminating credible, unbiased information nationwide. The proposed multimedia studio and digital-first approach are expected to further strengthen its mission of providing accurate and authoritative news to the public.
