At least five killed in a blast in north-western Syria

Damascus, Nov 26, (dpa/GNA) – A massive explosion tore through Syria’s northern Idlib countryside on Wednesday, killing five people and injuring at least 10 others, local authorities reported.

The blast occurred at on the northern edge of the town of Kafr Takharim, and destroyed a warehouse storing rockets and ammunition

The media office of the Internal Security Command in Idlib said initial investigations, indicated that the explosion was triggered by work being carried out at a nearby workshop.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed, and it remains unclear whether they were civilians or combatants, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Dr Samer Ourabi, director of the Idlib Health Directorate, told dpa that emergency and ambulance teams responded immediately, and field medical crews were continuing to provide aid while closely monitoring developments.

Initial reports also indicated injuries in surrounding agricultural areas among civilians collecting olives from their fields.

Local sources reported that the warehouse belonged to one of the factions operating in the area, which is densely populated.

Security forces have been deployed to the scene to secure the area and investigate the cause of the blast.

Engineering teams worked to handle the remnants of the explosion, while authorities were seeking to determine the party responsible.

The incident highlights ongoing security risks in northern Idlib, where armed groups and densely populated civilian areas often exist in close proximity.
