Sakumono, Oct. 10, GNA -The Tema West Municipal Office of the Social Welfare and Community Development, collaborating with the Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA), has organised free health screening for the aged in the municipality.
They received screening for general illnesses, eye, ear problems, and hypertension, as well as a talk on good health practices.
This forms part of the municipality’s commemoration of the International Day of Older Persons.
Madam Clara Sowah, the Tema West Director for Social Welfare and Community Development, called for the establishment of a shelter for the aged in the area, noting that the Social Services Committee has discussed the issue and found it important to have a shelter.
Madam Sowah disclosed that her outfit used to be traumatised by the aged, especially those with dementia, passing through for help, adding that because there was no shelter to keep them, there were situations where she, as a social worker had to use her pocket money to arrange for a guest house for the aged who were in confused states.
She urged relatives to take good care of their aged families, noting that there was the need to appreciate them, as one day the younger ones would also transition into senior citizens.
“I know one day I will also be a senior citizen, so, it’s important that I start helping them now so that, when it gets to my time, I will also get the needed help,” she said.
Mr. Ludwig Teye Totimeh, the Tema West Municipal Chief Executive, said the municipality has very strong and capable aged, adding that the occasion enabled them to interact with the older persons and provide them with screening, awareness, and medication.
Mr. Totimeh added that there was a lot that the youth could emulate, as they are very conscious of their health, routine health checkups, and eating well
