Macron: Gaza deal must be followed by two-state solution

Paris, Oct 10, (dpa/GNA) – French President Emmanuel Macron, has reiterated his support for a two-state solution, at the opening of an international conference on the Middle East conflict, while also warning against more Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

Speaking in Paris on Thursday evening, Macron noted that US President Donald Trump had outlined an ambitious path towards a comprehensive regional agreement.

Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas reached an initial agreement earlier on Thursday, as part of efforts to end the Gaza conflict.

“This commitment is crucial, and we are here to support this vision, namely a lasting ceasefire and stabilization of the Gaza Strip, which can provide security for all through a political solution based on a Palestinian state and, ultimately, peaceful coexistence in the region,” Macron said.

To achieve this, he stressed, preparatory work must be undertaken to establish governance in Gaza, that fully involves the Palestinian Authority but completely excludes Hamas.

Short-term humanitarian aid alone would not suffice, he warned. “We must urgently support the Palestinian Authority, which is facing a severe financial crisis, to stabilize its governance, provide basic services and maintain security.”

The French president also cautioned Israel against building more settlements in the West Bank. “The acceleration of settlement construction in the West Bank poses an existential threat to the State of Palestine.

“It is not only unacceptable and contrary to international law, but also fuels tension, violence and instability.”

Macron added that there was no need to create another conflict, alongside the one currently being addressed.

Foreign ministers from European, Arab and other Muslim countries gathered in Paris to discuss plans for support and reconstruction once the war ends.
