Mpohor-Fiase residents cry over poor state of their roads

Mpohor (W/R), Sept. 25, GNA-Residents in the Mpohor-Fiase District of the Western Region have expressed worry over the neglect by successive governments to construct roads within the district.

According to them, despite several campaign promises, their roads had been left in a deplorable state for years, a situation seriously impacting their living standards.

Mpohor-Fiase is situated in the South-Eastern part of the Western Region and is home to over 52,000 people, who are predominantly farmers, and despite its role as a major food basket for the region, the district has no single asphalted road.

The roads in the district have been riddled with deep potholes, making commuting uncomfortable, risking lives, and impacting access to healthcare and other essential services.

Community members said constructing their roads would not only ease commuting but also boost trade and unlock the economic potential in the district.

Mr Michael Kedja, a commercial driver, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that the poor state of the road continued to have a negative toll on their livelihoods.

He said: “The poor state of our roads is killing us because we spend much of our income on maintenance and repair works, so we are not able to save anything for our families.”

He appealed to the government through the District Assembly to take urgent steps and bring contractors back on site to fix the roads.

Mr Kwame Safo, an “okada” rider, said: “We are suffering on our roads because not even one of them has been asphalted. In cases of health and other emergencies, we struggle a lot, so we are appealing to authorities to do something about it for us.”

Meanwhile, Madam Sophia Aubynn, the Mpohor-Fiase District Chief Executive, said the Assembly was working tirelessly to get contractors back on site to fix the deplorable roads in the area.
