Brussels, Sept 30, (dpa/GNA) – The European Union on Monday has reimposed suspended sanctions on Iran, following Teheran’s failure to comply with an agreement, aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear bomb.
The 2015 agreement provided for restrictions on Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme, in return for sanctions relief. Iran has however not sufficiently complied with its obligations under the treaty, prompting international sanctions to be being reinstated.
The EU’s reimposed sanctions include a ban on the import, purchase, and transport of crude oil, oil products and natural gas as well as trade in certain software products, energy technology, marine equipment, precious metals and diamonds, a press release said.
Additionally they include measures to prevent Iranian cargo aircraft from accessing EU airports, as well as a ban on the maintenance and repair of Iranian cargo aircraft or ships transporting certain materials or goods.
Travel bans and asset freezes are to be reintroduced against individuals associated with the Iranian nuclear programme as well as companies and organizations.
The EU move to reimpose the sanctions comes after a decision by the United Nations’ Security Council to not extend the lifting of UN sanctions on Iran earlier this month.
Previously Germany, the UK and France had called for the punitive measures to be reinstated after Iran missed a deadline to comply with the 2015 agreement.
The restored sanctions come in addition to sanctions the EU had imposed independently for human rights violations, and military support for Russia in its war against Ukraine, which were not lifted under the nuclear deal. These measures also include an arms embargo.
