Sunyani, (Bono), Aug. 20, GNA – The Global Media Foundation (GloMeF), a media advocacy Non-Governmental Organisation, has expressed concerns about the widespread of fake news by some traditional and social media outlets.
A statement issued and signed by Mr Raphael Ahenu, the Chief Executive Officer of GloMeF and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, said: “In fact we are deeply worried and concerned about the rising spread of fake news by some traditional and reputable Television and radio stations now”. It noted that the proliferation of misinformation, often driven by political interests, undermined public trust in the media.
“It is astonishing that in an age of accessible fact-checking tools, some media organizations continue to prioritize sensationalism over truth.
We do not primarily blame those who make reckless political statements, however we hold the media accountable for failing to verify their facts before going to press”, the statement indicated.
The statement emphasized that the disregard for accuracy eroded journalistic credibility and weakens the nation’s democratic institutions and called on traditional media outlets to recommit to ethical reporting and rigorous verification processes.
It said: “Fact verification must never be compromised for the sake of speed or political expediency. The press must serve as a beacon of truth and not an amplifier of lies.” GloMeF is a leading NGO dedicated to promoting media professionalism, transparency, and accountability.
Through advocacy, training, and research, GloMeF works to strengthen democratic governance and empower journalists to uphold the highest ethical standards.
