Hundreds Screened by Ghana Medical Relief in Berekum

Berekum (Bono), July 22, GNA – Hundreds of residents in the Berekum Municipality are benefitting from a comprehensive health screening exercise aimed at improving their overall well-being.

The initiative, spearheaded by Ghana Medical Relief (GMR), is part of a five-day medical outreach programme running from Monday, July 21 to Friday, July 25 at the Berekum Holy Family Hospital.

The screenings cover a wide range of conditions including ear, nose and throat (ENT), hypertension, diabetes, psychiatric disorders, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, and dentistry. Beneficiaries also receive oral healthcare, general medical services, essential medications, and free National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration and renewals.

Additionally, patients with hernias, fibroids, prostate enlargement, and related conditions will undergo free surgery. Pregnant women are also receiving ultrasound scans to assess the health of their unborn babies.

The outreach is a collaborative effort between GMR — a non-profit humanitarian organization based in Ghana and the United States — the Berekum Citizens Association, Holy Family Hospital, and the Berekum Municipal Health Directorate. It aims to reach approximately 10,000 people across the municipality.

Speaking at the launch of the programme, Dr. Samuel Kwapong Owusu, Founder of GMR, emphasized the organization’s commitment to volunteer-driven healthcare and donor-supported outreach.

“Our mission is entirely driven by volunteerism and supported by generous individuals and institutions,” he stated.

He added that the initiative would help Ghana progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), which aims to ensure good health and well-being for all by 2030.

Dr. Alfred Opata, Coordinator for GMR Ghana, said patients would be assessed for surgery in collaboration with Holy Family Hospital staff to ensure proper treatment and follow-up care.

Member of Parliament for Berekum East, Elder Simon Ampaabeng Kyeremeh, described the initiative as timely and impactful, pledging his full support.

“This is exactly the kind of intervention we seek for the people of Berekum,” he said, urging residents to take full advantage of the services.
