Ho (V/R), June 16, GNA – The Adonai University College of Research and Entrepreneurship (AUCRE) has held its maiden graduation ceremony in Ho with a call on graduates and young entrepreneurs to embrace innovation as a critical tool for transforming society and shaping the future.
The event, held on the theme: “The Power of Innovation: Shaping the Next Generation of Entrepreneurs,” saw 45 students graduate from the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic year groups in Diploma and Certificate.
Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Raymond Dziwornu, Director of the Office of Doctoral Programmes at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), described the theme as highly relevant in a time where innovation was key to survival and progress.
“Innovation is the lifeblood of entrepreneurship. It is not just about creating new products or services, but about thinking differently, challenging the norm, and pushing the boundaries of what is possible,” Prof. Dziwornu said.
He emphasised that countries such as Switzerland, South Korea, and China, which have high Global Innovation Index (GII) scores of over 60, were seeing faster and more inclusive economic growth.
In contrast, Ghana’s GII score stands at just 20, signaling a need for greater focus on innovation-driven development.
Prof. Dziwornu stressed that innovation had the power to transform economies, solve complex problems, and improve quality of life.
He cited several examples to illustrate this transformation—from traditional mail delivery systems to digital communication, and from roadside taxi-hailing to app-based transport services like Uber. He also referenced KIVo’s innovations in processing gari soakings, as well as global disruptors like Steve Jobs (Apple) and Jeff Bezos (Amazon).
“Markets are dynamic, technologies are evolving, and consumer preferences are shifting rapidly. Entrepreneurs must innovate or risk being left behind,” he warned.
Prof. Dziwornu shared the inspiring story of Makafui, a former UPSA student who turned Ghana’s plastic waste problem into an entrepreneurial solution by creating sustainable school furniture.
He urged graduates to look for similar innovative solutions, especially in light of the recent presidential directive to phase out wooden furniture in schools to protect forests.
“This presents a clear opportunity for entrepreneurs to produce school chairs from recycled plastic waste,” he noted.
To nurture innovation in young entrepreneurs, he recommended creating an environment that encourages experimentation, celebrating creativity and learning from failure, equipping learners with critical thinking and problem-solving skills, promoting collaboration and partnerships, offering seed funding and incubation support, providing mentorship and networking platforms.
He advised the graduates to remain bold, dream big, embrace curiosity, and pursue excellence.
“You are now equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed. Take risks, challenge the norm, and stand out as the next generation of entrepreneurs,” he said.
Reverend Dr. Bright Adonai, Acting Rector of AUCRE, reflected on the university’s journey since its establishment in October 2022 with 91 students.
Despite infrastructure and staffing challenges, he said the institution remained firmly committed to excellence.
“We are determined to rise beyond the odds and build a world-class institution of research and entrepreneurship. We invite government, stakeholders, and partners to support this transformative journey,” he said.
He congratulated the graduating class, urging them to make meaningful contributions in their fields.
“The future holds great promise. Step into it with confidence, purpose, and determination,” Rev. Dr. Adonai added.
Prof. John Bright Aheto, Chairman of the AUCRE Governing Council, also addressed the graduates, encouraging them to go into the world as proud ambassadors of the university.
“The University of Ghana began with 71 students—we started with more than that. Ten years from now, you’ll be amazed at what AUCRE will become,” he said.
He emphasised the importance of integrity, noting that graduates must be leaders who uphold high ethical standards and make their alma mater proud.
Prof. Aheto also commended parents, guardians, and counselors whose support helped the graduates reach the important milestone.
The Valedictorian, Jonathan Dovonon, delivered an inspiring message to his colleagues, urging them to be bold and innovative as they enter the entrepreneurial world.
“Some may see this institution as small, but we are prepared to rise and shine. I believe one day we will employ graduates from the biggest universities,” he said.
The colorful ceremony brought together faculty, students, families, and dignitaries to celebrate a significant milestone in AUCRE’s young but promising journey toward becoming a leading force in entrepreneurial education in Ghana.
