Teleku-Bokazo (W/R), May 7, GNA – An Anti-galamsey task force set up by the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ellembelle has arrested 11 illegal mining suspects at Mile 3 near Teleku-Bokazo.
The 11 illegal mining suspects, including two Chinese Nationals and nine Ghanaians, posed as National Security operatives.
The swoop involved a team from the District Police Command and a taskforce set up by the DCE.
It also formed part of the national campaign against illegal mining activities by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah.
According to Mr Joseph Agyekum, the District Chief Executive, the District would not tolerate any form of illegal mining.
“Our district will be a hub for responsible mining and a no-go area for galamseyers …We will move according to our pace, but assiduously, to curb this 8-year menace without pressure or influence from any quarters”, Mr Agyekum opined
The DCE said the operation demonstrated the District ‘s commitment to enforcing regulations and protecting the environment.
He said the arrest sent a strong message to those involved in illegal mining activities, adding that the suspects were expected to face prosecution for their alleged crimes.
According to the DCE, the District Assembly would continue to work with security agencies to ensure compliance with mining regulations.
The combined taskforce seized four excavators together with other rifles from the illegal mining site which was set ablaze.
