Accra, April 29, GNA – Scores of people, mainly public sector workers on Tuesday thronged the forecourt of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) at the Ministries to participate in a chicken road show.

The event, held by the Women In Poultry Value Chain (WIPVaC), with support from the West Africa Food System Resilience Programme (FSRP), is to mark WIPVaC’s 8th anniversary celebrations.

The public sampled hot, tasty nutritious grilled chicken with kenkey and there was also promotional sales of fresh, frozen, and homegrown chicken at off-market affordable prices.

Women In Poultry Value Chain is an umbrella organisation that seeks to bring together all women along the poultry value chain for common interests.

It comprises of aggregators of maize and soya, day-old chicks suppliers, dealers in poultry inputs such as fishmeal, concentrates, poultry drugs and poultry feed, poultry farmers, egg sellers, distributors of chicken and guinea fowl, and processors of poultry products.

The goal is to create new opportunities for women along the poultry value chain to stimulate developments for the benefit of society.

WIPVaC is a beneficiary of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA-FSRP’s) Poultry Intensification Scheme (PIS), which commenced in 2024, under which they took delivery of input credit comprising of day-old-chicks, feeds, vaccines and training for broiler production.

Their first cycle of production under the scheme is currently in the completion stage and ready for the market.

Ms Emelda Adii, the Gender Focal Person of FSRP, told the Ghana News Agency that the project was reviving collapsed farms and businesses.

She said the intervention was to ensure that women were able to take care of their families and help fight the impact of climate change.

Madam Victoria Norgbe, the WIPVaC President, said the project, an input credit, was helping to reduce the challenges members of the Association faced in looking for day old chicks and other resources to manage the business.

She said the Road Show would promote the eating of Ghana chicken and grow the local economy.

Mr Kofi Anokye, a public servant, said the show was a commendable move to encourage the consumption of homegrown chicken.

“This is a good initiative. It has created awareness for people to patronise Ghanaian poultry, and I believe many more will start making the switch,” he said.

Nana Kwame Boadu, a staff of the Ministry of Education, said he was impressed by the quality of poultry on display.

“I’m always looking for affordable and quality chicken. What I saw here gives me confidence that we can rely on local producers instead of importing everything,” he noted.

Madam Elizabeth Nkrumah, a trader, said the show should be regular and done in the regions, to encourage the populace to switch to local poultry and commended WIPVaC and FSRP, for their foresight.

During the 2024 National Farmers Day Exhibitions and celebration, FSRP mounted a similar Chicken Road Show at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park, during which visitors at the exhibition grounds were treated with hot, tasty, nutritious grilled homegrown chicken.

FSRP is a Government of Ghana project being implemented by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, sponsored by the World Bank and coordinated by ECOWAS.
