Sunyani, (Bono), March 7, GNA – The Indigenous Women Empowerment Network (IWEN) has urged indigenous women to strive and remain at the forefront of driving transformative change and foster inclusive growth in local communities and beyond.
IWEN is a non-profit organisation committed to empowering Indigenous women through education, advocacy, and community support.
As Ghana joins the rest of the world to celebrate the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD), the Network called on the need to amplify the voices of indigenous women, promote cultural preservation, and advance gender equity.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Championing equity and innovation” and highlights the vital role of indigenous women towards transformative development.
“IWD celebration which falls on March 8, every year, recognises incredible contributions of women worldwide, and a call to action to ensure equity and opportunity for all”, Madam Celestina Maame Esi Andoh, Co-Founder and Executive Director of IWEN said in a statement issued to commemorate the Day.
A copy of the statement made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on Friday recognised, appreciated, and lauded the contributions of indigenous women for their efforts and pivotal role in advocating for their rights, preserving cultural heritage, and leading innovative solutions to global challenges.
Despite facing systemic barriers, indigenous women continued to inspire and lead with strength and determination, it added.
“At IWEN, we are dedicated to empowering Indigenous women by providing them with the tools and platforms they need to innovate and lead,” the statement indicated.
The Network had put in place several key initiatives, including innovation and entrepreneurship which would be launched to support Indigenous women entrepreneurs with resources, training, and mentorship, fostering innovation and economic empowerment.
It said, “under our cultural heritage digital archive, we are developing a digital platform to preserve and share indigenous knowledge, languages, and traditions, ensuring cultural heritage is accessible and celebrated globally.”
The Network is also strengthening partnerships with international organisations to amplify the voices of indigenous women and advocate for policies that promote gender equity and social justice.
It therefore called for support towards creating a more equitable and innovative future for indigenous women.
