By Iddi Yire

Accra, Dec 10, GNA – Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman, National Democratic Congress (NDC), has thanked Ghanaians for returning the Party to power.

He said: “The Ghanaians have given us this mandate to accomplish the task of national reconstruction.

“And so, nobody should tell us the weight of responsibility that we have. We cannot afford to disappoint them.”

Mr. Nketia, in support of the victory speech of President-elect John Dramani Mahama, delivered on Monday night in Accra, urged NDC party members, supporters and faithful to try and cut short their celebrations and begin to rescue the nation.

“So, in the coming weeks, let us try and cut short our celebrations and begin seriously planning how to rescue our dear country. Thank you very much. And may God bless our homeland Ghana and make it great and strong,” he said.

The event took place on Monday night, a few hours after the Electoral Commission had declared him the winner of the Presidential Election with 56.55 per cent of valid votes cast.

Mr. Nketia said he was thanking all Ghanaians, the Party’s foot soldiers, the Functional National Executives, the Constituencies’ Executives, the Regional Executives, and the National Executives and by extension, to all previous Executives of the NDC.

The Chairman reiterated that the Party has never seen this level of total mobilization of its rank and file to fight and achieve a purpose; declaring that “and at long last, the battle has ended”.

“And the great elephant has been slaughtered mercilessly. But as we enjoy the victory, I want to specially mention for special commendation for the technical staff of our Headquarters who managed this election very, very successfully.”

He mentioned the directors of elections, the directors of IT, and all other persons at the NDC’s Headquarters, who played a role in managing this election.

“Let me advise that we should be modest in our celebrations. Because I can almost feel the weight of responsibility on our shoulders,” he said.
