Accra, Dec. 10, GNA- The Media Coalition Ghana has extended congratulations to John Dramani Mahama, the President-elect, on his victory in the 2024 presidential election.

The Coalition also praised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, for his demonstration of maturity and statesmanship in conceding defeat and personally calling former President Mahama to offer congratulations.

Presenting the Coalition’s assessment of the election process in Accra on Tuesday, Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), emphasized the importance of moderation and magnanimity in celebrating the victory.

He urged the winning side to be mindful not to worsen the emotional impact of the loss for the opposition.

“On the other hand, we urge the losers to also exercise restraint in the face of provocation,” he said.

He said they must take a cue from the maturity exhibited by Dr Bawumia and be calm.

The assessment was based on reports collected from the election volunteers deployed by the GJA across the 276 constituencies in Ghana under the National Media Collation Centre Project.

Mr. Dwumfour, who led the Coalition, urged political party leaders, particularly those from the NPP and NDC, to advise their supporters to exercise restraint in their actions during this period.

He expressed concern over incidents of vandalism in various parts of the country, where individuals have taken matters into their own hands, engaging in the destruction, and looting of state property.
“We condemn these acts of vandalism and call on the perpetrators to stop it immediately,” he added.
Mr. Dwumfour called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure law and order by arresting and prosecuting those responsible for such acts of lawlessness.

He also urged the media to continue playing its role in fostering peace and national unity.
“We must avoid divisive tendencies or anything that will undermine the peace of the country and Let’s remain professional in the discharge of our duties,” he added.

The Media Coalition Ghana is made up of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), and the New Media Association of Ghana.
