Budapest, Nov 1. (dpa/GNA) – The head of the Serbian Criminal Police, Marko Kričak, has been arrested and charged with abuse of office, state news agency Tanjug reported on Sunday.
The public prosecutor’s office ordered the arrest of both Kričak and his deputy, Boško Sekulović, a week after parliamentary elections, according to the report.
In the October 25 elections, the opposition Student List secured a clear majority of parliamentary seats, pushing the ruling camp, led by long-time leader Aleksandar Vučić, into opposition.
Although the transfer of power has not yet taken place, the strongholds of the Vučić system are already showing signs of erosion.
The latest development is the arrest of a senior police officer regarded as closest to Vučić.
According to Tanjug, prosecutors accuse Kričak of suppressing and manipulating an investigation into a murder linked to organized crime. Kričak allegedly manipulated evidence in such a way that prosecutors dropped charges of aiding and abetting murder.
Kričak worked as a car salesman before being recruited into Serbia’s domestic intelligence agency, the BIA, as a loyal supporter of Vučić’s Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).
From July 2023, he commanded the Serbian police’s personal protection unit (JZO). At the end of 2025, he was appointed head of the Serbian Criminal Police.
According to the Tanjug report, prosecutors have also accused him of abusing and intimidating peaceful demonstrators.
In August 2025, JZO officers allegedly abducted a group of university students and took them to the basement of the government building in Belgrade. Kričak, who headed the unit at the time, is alleged to have personally led the operation, assaulted one female student and threatened to rape her.
