Hohoe (V/R), Oct. 6, GNA – The Hohoe Municipal Assembly in the Volta Region has presented economic empowerment items to 132 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to help improve their livelihoods.
The items included deep freezers, fufu-pounding machines, wooden tabletop kiosks, sterilisers and an air compressor.
Mrs Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, Member of Parliament for the Awutu Senya West Constituency and Deputy Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, said the government was committed to improving the welfare of PWDs.
She said the increase in the disability component of the District Assemblies Common Fund to five per cent was evidence of the government’s commitment to their welfare.
Mrs Tetteh-Agbotui urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the items and keep them in good condition.
Mr Prosper Kumi, Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive, said the government and the Assembly recognised the important role of PWDs in nation-building.
He said the items were distributed in batches to ensure that all the beneficiaries were adequately catered for.
Mr Kumi expressed the hope that the beneficiaries would put the support they received to good use to improve their livelihoods.
Mr Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, Member of Parliament for Hohoe, said it was encouraging that beneficiaries of previous donations were making good use of the items they received and urged the current beneficiaries to emulate them.
He said the government would continue to prioritise the needs of PWDs nationwide, including those in the Hohoe Municipality.
Mr Henry Yanpalleh, Hohoe Municipal Director of Social Welfare and Community Development, said the Department would follow up on the beneficiaries to ensure that the items were being used for their intended purposes.
He said the Assembly had embossed the items and cautioned the beneficiaries against selling them.
