Two dead, 14 injured in Nchiraa Yam Festival disturbances

Sunyani (Bono), Oct. 6, GNA – Calm has returned to Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region following disturbances that erupted in the area on Saturday, October 3, 2026.  

The Police confirmed that two people died while 14 others, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds in the disturbances.  

The incident occurred during the 2026 celebration of the annual Yam Festival of the chiefs and people of Nchiraa.  

A statement issued and signed by Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, Public Relations Officer of the Bono Regional Police Administration, said the incident occurred at about 1730 hours, after the festival ended.  

A copy of the statement made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani said the bodies of the deceased had since been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.  

Those who sustained gunshot wounds were responding to treatment, the statement said.  

It said the incident occurred while Nana Tabiri Yaw II, Chief of Nchiraa, and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to the palace when gunshots were heard.  

The statement said the Police had since intensified patrols in the area and assured the public that every effort was being made to arrest those involved in the disturbances.
