Obuasi (Ash), Oct. 30, GNA – AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine, is strengthening efforts to develop human capital in its host communities through sustained investment in tertiary education.
The Mine has awarded scholarships to 30 additional students under its Community Scholarship Support Scheme, bringing the number of beneficiaries to 50 since the programme was launched.
The initiative forms part of the Mine’s 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), which prioritises education and skills development as key drivers of sustainable community growth.
Mr. Edmund Oduro Agyei, the Director, Sustainability Management, AGA Obuasi Mine, reaffirmed the Mine’s commitment to expanding access to higher education, describing education as a critical component of its development agenda.
He said the scholarship scheme complemented the Mine’s broader efforts to bring tertiary education closer to students in its host communities, including its role in establishing the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Obuasi Campus.
The awards ceremony marked the second rollout of the scheme, following the initial support provided to 20 students.
Rev. Professor Phillip Antwi Agyei, who represented the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, commended the Mine for its continued investment in education.
He encouraged the beneficiaries to remain committed to their studies and strive to become future problem-solvers and ambassadors of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.
The beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the Mine, saying the scholarships would ease the financial burden associated with tertiary education and enable them to concentrate on their academic work.
In addition to financial assistance covering their education for the duration of their respective programmes, the students received laptops and backpacks to support their studies.
The Community Scholarship Support Scheme is part of the Mine’s broader commitment to creating sustainable opportunities for young people through education and skills development.
