Sunyani (Bono), Oct. 30, GNA – Mrs Mohammed Suraj, Public Relations Officer of the Sunyani Technical University (STU), has urged students to remain focused and continue studying independently amid the ongoing strike by the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG).
She advised students, particularly freshers, to take advantage of the university’s available academic resources, including the library, while government engages TUTAG to address its concerns.
Speaking to the media in Sunyani, Mrs Suraj acknowledged that the industrial action had been frustrating and had adversely affected students.
A visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to the university campus revealed that the strike had disrupted academic activities and left many students uncertain about the continuation of their studies.
Some students told the GNA that they had not attended lectures since the university reopened from its semester break on October 5, 2026.
Miss Farida Abdul, a student, appealed to the Government to address the concerns of TUTAG to enable academic work to resume.
Meanwhile, TUTAG is expected to suspend its strike following discussions with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and the Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G).
The GNA gathered that the decision was reached at a meeting held on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, aimed at finding an amicable resolution to the issues raised by the Association.
The industrial action centres on the non-payment of staff engaged on post-retirement contracts, a directive requiring Assistant Lecturers to obtain PhDs before promotion to the rank of Lecturer, and the classification of academic librarians as academic staff.
