Moscow, Sept 8. (dpa/GNA) – US President, Donald Trump, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, spoke by phone following a visit by US mediators to Kiev and Moscow for talks on ending the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin said on Tuesday.
Putin assured Trump that Russia had no “aggressive plans” towards Europe, Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov told reporters.
The Russian president also gave Trump what Ushakov described as an “objective and detailed analysis of developments on the battlefield”, and outlined what the US president could “realistically do to bring about a swift end to the hostilities.”
Trump, meanwhile, held out the prospect of fully restoring relations between Russia and the United States, if the war in Ukraine ends, according to Ushakov’s account.
The two leaders also discussed further prisoner exchanges. The call lasted about an hour, Ushakov said.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of neighbouring Ukraine in February 2022. Washington’s on-again, off-again efforts to broker an end to the war saw a fresh push at the weekend, when US special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner travelled to Moscow and Kiev for talks with Russian and Ukrainian leaders.
No significant progress towards a peace settlement was announced following the meetings.
