Berlin, Nov 4. (dpa/GNA) – Friedrich Merz, German Chancellor, said he believes little will change in Washington after the Republicans’ crushing defeat in the US midterm elections, noting that President Donald Trump had previously relied heavily on executive orders to push through his agenda.
Speaking at an economic forum in Berlin on Wednesday, Merz said that Trump had largely governed without involving Congress since taking office in early 2025, adding that he believed that the US president would continue to do so.
The German chancellor noted that the US Constitution grants a president far-reaching powers, allowing Trump to make decisions independently of Congress.
Merz said the only area where he expects to see change is the budget, with Democrats able to block the administration’s financial planning after having gained control in both chambers of Congress.
This would also affect planning of the US armed forces, Merz said.
