US imposes sanctions on 27 Iranian airlines

Washington, Sept 8. (dpa/GNA) – The United States has imposed sanctions on several major Iranian airlines, as part of its war against Iran.

The Treasury Department on Tuesday, announced the new measures targeting both state-owned and private carriers, adding 27 Iranian airlines to its sanctions list.

They include the carriers Kish Airlines, Iran Air Tour and ATA Airlines. Several of Iran’s largest airlines, including Mahan Air, Iran Air and Meraj Air, were already subject to US sanctions. The latest measures significantly broaden Washington’s action against Iran’s aviation industry, covering a much larger share of the country’s air transport sector.

Foreign companies and banks could also face consequences, if they continue doing business with the sanctioned airlines. The measures are also likely to affect travellers. Foreign booking platforms and payment providers could stop working with the affected airlines for fear of US sanctions, making it more difficult to purchase tickets.

International airlines have largely avoided flying to Iran since the outbreak of the war at the end of February. Travellers seeking to reach Tehran have relied on Iranian airlines for connections via Istanbul or Dubai.
