Accra, Sept. 23, GNA – The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Wednesday explained that the attempted arrest of Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South, was in connection with an ongoing investigation.
The Office said: “The attempted arrest on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, formed part of lawful steps to secure the MP’s attendance in the investigation.”
In a statement issued in Accra, EOCO said it had previously invited Mr Baffour Awuah on two occasions in February 2026 to assist with the investigation, but he failed to honour the invitations.
The failure to honour the invitations prompted the Office to take further lawful steps to secure his attendance, it said.
EOCO said the situation escalated during the attempted arrest, resulting in officers assessing that further action could endanger public safety.
Consequently, the arrest was not successfully completed.
The statement said EOCO had identified two persons who, based on circumstances captured on video, allegedly intervened to facilitate the MP’s escape.
It said the conduct of the two persons was being assessed and that appropriate lawful steps would be taken, where necessary.
The EOCO, Mr Baffour Awuah subsequently proceeded to the precincts of Parliament to seek sanctuary, although Parliament was currently on recess.
The Office said it recognised and respected the constitutional privileges and immunities of Members of Parliament and would conduct its operations within the Constitution and applicable laws.
EOCO, however, clarified that membership of Parliament did not, by itself, bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law.
It said, at the same time, that it would not take any action inconsistent with parliamentary privilege or any other protection provided under the Constitution.
The Office urged the public to consider the incident within the context of its statutory responsibilities and the ongoing investigation.
