Ve-Golokuati (V/R), Sept 16, GNA – Mr Manfred Tawiah, the District Chief Executive of Afadzato South, has outlined a series of interventions to address challenges affecting teaching and learning in schools across the district.
This follows a meeting with headteachers from schools in the district to deliberate on issues confronting the education sector.
Mr Tawiah said the lack of electricity in some schools continued to hamper effective teaching and learning and affected the use of ICT tools.
He announced that the Assembly would prioritise the connection of electricity to every school in the district, with the intervention captured under the 2027 Composite Budget and Annual Action Plan.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Tawiah said the Assembly would adopt a clustering approach – connecting schools close to existing Electricity Company of Ghana low-voltage poles first, while deploying solar power for remote highland communities such as Gbledi, Logato and Liati.
He said the Assembly, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service, would conduct an audit of all off-grid schools to establish their names, locations and enrolment figures to inform budgeting.
Mr Tawiah said inadequate teacher accommodation remained a major challenge, discouraging teachers from accepting postings or staying at post in some communities.
He said the district administration was working to expand accommodation facilities for teachers to improve retention.
On funding, the DCE said the interventions would be financed through the District Assemblies Common Fund under education infrastructure, while the Assembly would also apply to the Ministry of Energy for extension of electricity to schools as social infrastructure.
He acknowledged ICT challenges in several schools and gave assurance that the Assembly would provide the necessary facilities and resources to enhance teaching and learning and promote digital education.
Mr Tawiah reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to improving the overall educational environment and called for sustained collaboration between the Assembly and school heads.
