Nkwanta (O/R), Sept. 16, GNA – Mr Jonathan Korsinah, Nkwanta South Municipal Director of Education in the Oti Region, has expressed satisfaction with the encouraging attendance of teachers and students across schools in the Municipality following the resumption of academic activities after recent community unrest.
He said attendance levels had previously been low due to insecurity in parts of the Municipality, which affected the ability of some teachers, and particularly students, to return to school after reopening.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency after visiting several schools during the first week of reopening, Mr Korsinah said the attendance recorded was encouraging and reflected the commitment of both teachers and students to resume academic work.
According to him, the presence of teachers and students in the various schools was a positive development, especially considering the challenges the education sector had experienced as a result of unrest in some communities.
Mr Korsinah noted that the return of students to the classroom was an important step towards restoring normalcy in the education sector and preventing further loss of instructional hours.
The Director, however, expressed concern about the situation at Keri School, which has remained closed for some time due to security concerns in the area.
He said the continued closure of the school was worrying, as prolonged interruptions in education could adversely affect the academic progress and future prospects of children in the community.
Mr Korsinah therefore called for sustained collaboration among education authorities, traditional leaders, parents, community members and security agencies to create the appropriate conditions for the safe reopening of the school.
He also appealed to parents and guardians to support their children and wards by providing them with the essential educational materials required for effective learning.
The Director emphasised that while teachers and education authorities had a responsibility to deliver quality education, parents also played a critical role by ensuring that their children attended school regularly and had the necessary books, stationery, uniforms and other learning materials.
He encouraged students to remain focused on their studies and take full advantage of the opportunity to return to school.
Mr Korsinah also urged teachers to remain committed to their responsibilities and help create a conducive learning environment as schools gradually returned to normal operations.
He expressed optimism that with sustained peace and security, all schools in the Municipality would resume full operations and provide uninterrupted education to students.
Mr Korsinah said the improvement in attendance was an important step towards rebuilding confidence in the education system in the Municipality, where years of unrest and insecurity had negatively affected the academic lives of many children.
