Russia says two children killed in Ukrainian attack on Krasnodar

Moscow, Aug 24. (dpa/GNA) – Two children were killed in a Ukrainian drone attack on the southern Russian city of Krasnodar, according to local authorities.

Drone debris fell on a private children’s centre during the attack, Russian state news agency TASS reported early on Monday, citing Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev. Two children were killed and seven others injured, while two adults were also taken to hospital, the report said. The reports could not initially be independently verified.

Falling drone debris also reportedly hit a warehouse, several houses and residential blocks still under construction. The warehouse belonged to Ozon, Russia’s second-largest online retailer, and caught fire, according to TASS. The company said there were no injuries or fatalities.

Emergency crews were at the scene trying to extinguish the blaze, TASS reported, again citing Kondratyev. Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia’s full-scale invasion for four and a half years with Western military support.

Both sides make extensive use of drones in their attacks because they are relatively cheap to produce, and can be difficult to intercept when launched in large numbers.

During some waves of attacks, hundreds of drones are deployed at the same time, in an attempt to overwhelm air defences. Russia and Ukraine regularly accuse each other of deliberately targeting civilians, although casualties and damage have been far greater in Ukraine.
