Agona Duakwa (C/R), Aug. 16, GNA – The Chiefs and people of Duakwa in the Agona East District of the Central region, have launched their 2026 Akwambo festival, calling on the citizens both home and abroad to donate to support developmental projects.
Addressing the chiefs and people to officially launch the festival, Nana Kweku Mbroh IV, the Tufuhene of Agona Duakwa, said the annual celebration of the festival kept citizens abreast with their customs and traditions and to know the historical background of their ancestors who settled the town.
The festival is used to take stock of the past and measures adopted to enhance the progress of the town.
Nana Mbroh announced that funds would be raised to continue the construction of a multi-million Cedi community center project which started two years ago.
He called on the people of Duakwa to pay their contributions towards the completion of the Community center and other self-help projects to give Agona Duakwa a facelift.
Nana Mbroh said the Afahye (festival) committee was seeking other alternatives to raise funds to construct decent public toilets in various communities, to ensure a clean and sound environment in the town.
The Tufuhene (sub-chief) used the occasion to appeal to political leaders in and outside Agona East, to support both financially and materially to complete the projects initiated by the chiefs and the people.
Nana Kweku Prah I, the Nifahene (sub-chief) of Agona Duakwa said the ongoing projects were initiated by the chiefs and elders because they could not rely solely on the government and urged private individuals and companies to get involved and support them.
The 2026 Festival will commence on Tuesday, September 29 with prayers from members of the Local Council of Churches.
There will also be the drumming of Mpintsin at the Odikro and other sub-chiefs’ palaces in the town, to commemorate the yam festival and to showcase customs and traditions.
There will be football match between the various families at Agona Duakwa, to be followed by activities including a general cleaning, health walk, candle night and bonfire.
An inter-school’s quiz competition and talent night will be held on Tuesday 6, by the Pupils and students of public and private schools, to be followed on Wednesday 07, by a youth forum, traditional quiz and old school night
On Thursday 8th October, float and street carnival and on Friday 9th October, the Asafo company and chiefs would perform Akwambo festival and live band preceded in the evening.
The festival will climax with a grand durbar on Saturday, on October 10 and on Sunday October 11, there will be a float by the chiefs and heads of family to bring the week-long festival to a close.
