Techiman (Bono East), July 13, GNA – Nana Amponsah Yeboah Takrah II, of the Sanitation Committee of the Techiman Metropolitan Assembly, has cautioned community members against littering around and indiscriminate waste disposal.
He said the Assembly had resolved to enforce sanitation bye-laws warning that offenders would not be spared, saying strict implementation of the sanitation bye-laws remained the surest way to change people’s bad attitude towards the environment.
“If people are punished for sanitation offences, it will accordingly deter like-minded others who litter around and throw refuse indiscriminately,” Nana Takrah, also the Ankobeahene (sub-chief) of the Techiman Traditional Council, stated.
The chief gave the caution at a meeting of the committee at Techiman, saying that a special task force would be set up to enforce the sanitation bye-laws.
Nana Takrah noted improved sanitation and waste management accelerate rapid socio-economic development, hence the need for the committee to facilitate the strict enforcement of the bye-laws.
He called for stakeholder support and cooperation towards the implementation of the bye-laws to protect the environment and improve sanitation and waste management too.
Mr Kweku Adjie Mensah, the Techiman Metropolitan Chief Executive, said that contracts had been awarded for the removal of waste from the quarters and on the streets.
He said the Assembly would not allow anybody to build or put structures on waterways and unauthorised places.
Oheneba Nana Antwi-Bosiako Owusu, the Kentenhene (sub-chief) of the Techiman Traditional Council pledged the council’s support in enforcing the bye-laws and to improve waste management and sanitation in the metropolis.
He said that the council in collaboration with the Assembly, Techiman Youth Association, and the security services would organise a massive clean-up exercise on July 18, 2026, to rid the metropolis of filth.
Nana Owusu said the participants would clean the Techiman Central Market, Techiman Zongo, Techiman Mamprusi line, and the Techiman main garage in the exercise, expected to commence around 0600hours.
He called on the members of the public to depoliticise the clean-up exercise and participate to improve the sanitation situation in the area.
